TransTools Utilities Reference

Application

General menu

To activate any TransTools Utilities command, you can do so from the general menu:

The general menu can be opened in any text editing window by pressing a custom key combination configurable using the Configuration dialogue. The default key combination is Windows key+A.

Paste Unformatted Text

When you paste text from the clipboard, you may often want to paste text without any formatting. This command does just that – it pastes the clipboard contents as simple text, with all the formatting removed.

The command can be activated from the General menu (by pressing the General menu hotkey), or by pressing a custom key combination configurable using the Configuration dialogue. The default key combination is Ctrl+Windows key+V.

Insert Symbol

This command displays a dialogue with a list of special characters (symbols) that you can insert in the active program.

All the symbols can be configured in the respective section of the Configuration dialogue. You can use up to 36 special symbols.

The command can be activated from the General menu (activated by pressing the General menu hotkey), or by pressing a custom key combination configurable using the Configuration dialogue. The default key combination is Ctrl+Windows key+S.

memoQ Tag Shift

This command may be useful for memoQ users who prefer to translate text by copying the source into the target and typing over it. Sometimes you will encounter segments which have a lot of "junk" tags, like in the example below:

Screenshot: junk tags in memoQ before shifting

In such cases, it is much simpler to put all the tags at the end of the segment because their position will not affect the final document formatting.

Screenshot: junk tags in memoQ after shifting

This is what memoQ Tag Shift does. It removes all tags, inserts them at the end of the segment, and then restores the previous caret position and selection.

Although memoQ already has Ctrl+F8 key combination to remove all tags, and Alt+F8 to insert all tags at once, it takes a lot of time to press the first key combination, go to end of segment, press the second key combination, and then return to the initial editing position. This command does everything in one fell swoop. It can also be used to remove all tags from the current segment because it will not re-insert tags missing from the source segment, but as an added bonus it will also restore the previous editing position (selection / caret).

Starting with TransTools Utilities version 1.1.0, the command can shift inline tags (blue ones) to the end of a segment in addition to memoQ tags (curly pink ones as in the screenshot above). This can be configured using the Configuration dialogue.

The command can be activated from the General menu (activated by pressing the General menu hotkey), or by pressing a custom key combination configurable using the Configuration dialogue. The default key combination is Windows key+Q.

Configuration

Before you can use TransTools Utilities, you need to configure it. Find TransTools Utilities blue earth icon in the system tray, right-click the icon and select Configure... You will be presented with TransTools Utilities Configuration dialogue.

General settings:

  1. General menu hotkey: This key combination (disabled by default) can be used to display TransTools Utilities menu from any Windows program. You must select both the modifier key combination and the regular key, which should be pressed together to show the menu. The menu provides you with quick access to all the commands.
  2. Clipboard paste speed: most commands use the clipboard to transfer text into the active Windows program. Using this dropdown list, you can set how quickly your computer pastes text from the clipboard. You can leave the setting unchanged unless TransTools Utilities works incorrectly.

Paste Unformatted Text:

  1. Paste Unformatted Text hotkey: This key combination (disabled by default) can be used to paste text from the clipboard without preserving its formatting. You must select both the modifier key combination and the regular key, which should be pressed together to activate the command.

Insert Symbol:

  1. Possible symbols: Enter all possible symbols that should be displayed on the Insert Symbol dialogue.
  2. Insert Symbol hotkey: This key combination (disabled by default) can be used to display the symbol insertion dialogue. You must select both the modifier key combination and the regular key, which should be pressed together to activate the command.
  3. Leave symbol on clipboard: if you need to use a particular symbol frequently, it makes sense to leave the symbol on the clipboard so you can paste it multiple times without opening the Insert Symbol dialogue. Check this option if you want this behaviour.

memoQ Tag Shift:

  1. memoQ Tag Shift hotkey: This key combination (disabled by default) can be used to activate the memoQ Tag Shift command on the current target segment. You must select both the modifier key combination and the regular key, which should be pressed together to activate the command.
  2. Re-insert inline tags: by default, the command places all memoQ tags ({1}) to the end of the segment. If you check this box, it will also put all inline tags (blue ones) at the end after memoQ tags.
